A Pendulum Board or Dowsing Board is a circular board that can be used in conjunction with a pendulum in the practice of divination. A common board will have the words “yes,” “no,” and “unclear” written on opposing sides, and it may also have the words “maybe” and/or “rephrase” written on it.

How to Use a Pendulum Board?

A  person will hold a pendulum still over the board and ask a question; the answer will be whichever word the pendulum swings over as it moves across the board.

First, you’ll need to set the stage.

As with any other ritual, it is important to first find your centre and tidy the space before beginning to use your pendulum board. This is a wonderful practise to get into before beginning any ritual. Before you sit quietly with your board, you can begin by meditating or just putting yourself in a state of mind that is open to receiving information.

You can also give your board a short cleanse using any of the cleansing methods that you want, such as using sound or crystals.

Step 2: Get clear about your questions.

After that, you should become quite clear on the question (or questions) that you want to ask. According to Lyons, the most effective questions for pendulum boards are yes-or-no questions. Instead of asking open-ended questions or using phrases like “should I,” you should try using phrases like “can I” or “do I” instead. Avoid difficult or nuanced inquiries. Example questions to ask:

If I choose not to do [X], will I be passing up an opportunity?

Am I making progress in the correct direction with my career?

Is there a future with [potential romantic interest]?

Is [the person I’m interested in] my soul mate?

Should I go to [event] if I want to make the most of my time and money?

Should I terminate my relationship with [a certain person]?

I’d like to get in touch with [a certain person].

Do I have any sort of karmic debt to pay off?

Utilize the pendulum as the third step.

While you are holding a pendulum over your board, you should ask your plain question in a clear and deliberate manner. It will start to swing back and forth, and the response that it finally settles on is the one that you are searching for. (Except in the unlikely event that it lands on “restate,” in which case you will need to rephrase your inquiry.)
